Aunty Agnes Shea High School is designed to reflect the ACT Education Directorate’s vision for a contemporary high school – one that places student-centred learning at its core, supported by flexibility, adaptability, and a strong foundation of inclusiveness.

It has been designed to accommodate 800 students and 100 teaching and ancillary staff, providing future-focused learning environments that enable student-centred pedagogy. Each setting encourages learning for students through collaboration, social interaction and active investigation.

Situated in the growing Gungahlin suburb of Taylor, a strong connection to place lies at the heart of its design, informed through site and stakeholder engagement, development of high-level site strategies, masterplan options, and concept design resolution in collaboration with consultants.

A key part of the reference design phase involved the co-development of a Country-led design narrative with Ngunnawal Knowledge Holder Richie Allan, informing built form, materiality, and site response.

The learning environments are flexible and future-focused, supporting a broad range of pedagogical approaches and empowering student agency.

All spaces were designed with wellbeing, accessibility, and autonomy in mind – integrating natural light, acoustic comfort, and clear sightlines. The layout promotes collaboration and movement between indoor and outdoor settings, with a strong emphasis on passive supervision, safety, and student ownership
