Originally built in 1884, to make reticulated water available to the central Albury district, The Pumphouse (formally The Pump Station) has had many lives, including supplying electricity to the area in the early 1900s. An extraordinary example of late 19th century architecture, it is now a thriving maker space, committed to fostering and inspiring the local arts communities.

ck architecture was engaged for the expansion and upgrade of the building, honouring its significant heritage value whilst introducing contemporary finishes to complement its exciting new life as a community arts space.

Special attention was paid to maintaining the historic roofing profile, preserving internal integrity, and introducing minimal additions like recycled timber pavilions to create an open yet intimate atmosphere for various artistic activities.

Glass viewing panels seamlessly integrated into the floor offer glimpses into the existing pump room, providing a unique insight into the building’s foundations.

The new building extension establishes a relationship with the adjacent structure, not through imitation but through subtle referencing of form, colour, and harmonious coexistence.
