    Canberra City

The refurbishment of the heritage significant HC Coombs Building at the ANU celebrates its new occupants, the College of Asia and the Pacific, and the extensive history of scholarship and thought leadership the building has contained since it was first completed in 1969. On arrival, a heavy base to the building holding a newly designed stair and ramp makes a clear and accessible entry point for the College. Timber paneling has been restored and reinterpreted throughout the interiors, while circular terrazzo stairs were highlighted, with new curved walls and wayfinding graphics at each key circulation hub. Where previously only singular office cells and corridors existed in the building’s hexagonal footprint, CK Architecture carefully inserted contemporary Tutorial and Breakout spaces respecting the original, rigorous form.
